ONE 2022 UK / Video and Improvised Music

This is an extract of a live guided improvised performance by Orchestra NEw at Cafe OTO, London.

Film / Graphic Score by Livia Garcia
Music by Orchestra NEw
1 April 2022

Khabat Abas, cello; Sofia Vaisman-Maturana, cello; Isidora Edwards, cello ;Shama Rahman, sitar; Shima Kobayashi, chromatic harmonica; Emi Watanabe, flutes; Caroline Kraabel, alto sax; Dee Byrne, alto sax; Sue Lynch, tenor sax, flute, clarinet; Cath Roberts, baritone sax; Charlotte Keeffe, trumpet Rosa Theodora, piano Greta Pistaceci, theremin and electronics Lara Jones, soprano saxophone.

Orchestra NEw was formed by saxophonist Caroline Kraabel in 2022. The Orchestra was made up of all women musicians and the concert on 1 April 2022 at Café OTO, London was to raise donations for Ukraine. I made a film-score based on one of my line drawings which the Orchestra improvised and performed to during the concert. The following texts are some guides that I gave the musicians prior to the performance.

First part (about 2 minutes 30 seconds). The number of ONE signifies unity. Red lines are symbols of chaos and changes.

Second part (about 2 minutes). Note the three circles would go in sync and out of sync. Think about how to represent this with sound. Red dot: moves from space into barriers and back to space again. Arrows – could be to do with volume but one is pointing down, i.e. contradicts the other two. Maybe one instrument starts to quiet or slow down? When you see a dash moving across the page, that’s pretty much the end of the piece. ONE stands strong in the middle at all times. These are just sketches of thoughts to get people thinking. Feel free to interpret and express.

In Search of […] Code for Undoing 2018 UK/HK / Video, Sound and Dance

Visual : Livia Garcia
Dance : Kim Geun Young (South Korea)
Sound : Red Pig Flower (South Korea/Berlin)

Producer : Makin Fung Bing Fai (Hong Kong)

A video of about 17 minutes long was produced as part of the Water Modulation Festival in Hong Kong. It was the first attempt in turning my line drawings into moving images. The work was then interpreted by sound artist Red Pig Flower (South Korea/Berlin) and dancer Kim Geun Young (South Korea) during two live performances at the McAuley Studio Theatre in Hong Kong. Producer: Makin Fung Bing Fai (Hong Kong).

The video is comprised of 4 Acts together with a Preface. Act 1: Blossom, Act 2: Industrialisation, Act 3: Poison Rain, Act 4: The Code. The narrative starts with a seed which blossoms into red flowers with the showering of clean rain. However, under excessive construction the rain slowly becomes poisonous and eventually kills the red flowers. Through the last Act The Code, I put forward a question: can we find a code to undo damages to the environment that are brought about by human interventions?
